John Herick Sturtevant

John H. Sturtevant- A Life Long Resident of Cortland County
John Herick Sturtevant, a life-long resident of Cortland county, passed quietly away at his home, 101 Tompkins-st., in this city at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon, July 22. Mr. Sturdevant had been gradually failing in health all through the winter, but was taken with grip a few weeks ago, since which time his failure has been much more rapid. He suffered no pain, but gradually grew weaker till the end came as stated above.
Mr. Sturtevant was born at South Cortland on March 23, 1838. He was one of the six children of Martha Calvert and Dr. Walstine Herick Sturtevant and, through for many years he has been in very frail health, he is the last one of his family to pass away. He has always lived in Cortland and vicinity.
In early manhood he became a member of the Presbyterian church of McGraw. Later he joined the First Methodist church in Cortland with his wife.
On May 12, 1875, he married Sarah J. Reed, who survives him. She is left in the old home where they were married over forty-one years ago. He is also survived by one daughter, Mrs. Grace E. Miner, and three grandsons, Bertram, Kenneth, and Carroll, to whom he was devotedly attached. 
He also leaves three nephews and one niece, Miss Martha P. McGraw, and Dr. Willis H. McGraw, of Cortland, Fred McGraw of Washington, D.C., and George W. McGraw of Letchworth, England, all children of his sister, Mrs. Melina S. McGraw.
For many years Mr. Sturtevant was the proprietor of a hat, cap, and men's furnishings store in Cortland and as such by his fair dealings and uniform courtesy won the esteem and regard of a large number. As health failed he retired from business and has lived quietly at his home. 
The funeral will be held at his late home, 101 Tompkins-st., on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
